Rationale and goals

Following Duval’s research in 2013 and 2018 based on the question, ‘Can entrepreneurial success be predicted?’, Fingerprint for Success (F4S) has been committed to researching performance, well-being, and human development in the future of work.

With the increasing levels of ADD/ADHD diagnoses and neurodiverse individuals entering the workforce, F4S has asked the question, ‘What are the superpowers of ADHD at work?’.

Here are some of the latest statistics informing our research:

  • In the United States alone, there has been a 42% increase in ADD/ADHD diagnoses over the past 8 years with 6.1 million children aged 2-17yrs diagnosed with ADD/ADHD in 2016.
  • Of these 6.1 million, 6 out of every 10 will also experience at least one other mental, emotional or behavioural disorder. Males are almost three times more likely to be diagnosed with ADD/ADHD than females. During their lifetimes, 13% of men will be diagnosed with ADD/ADHD. Comparatively 4.2% of women will be diagnosed. ADD/ADHD isn’t just a childhood disorder. About 4% of American adults over the age of 18 deal with ADHD on a daily basis.
  • A study by Freeman (2021) found that Individuals with ADD/ADHD are highly dopaminergic, resulting in a tendency to explore and engage with possibilities and a propensity for entrepreneurship. Individuals with ADD/ADHD were also found to be 1.7 times more likely to possess entrepreneurial goals. Coplan et al. (2021), conducted a series of interviews with companies who hired neurodiverse individuals including those with ADD/ADHD. With participants quoting them as an "untapped workforce" that can make a tremendous organizational and societal impact. Adding to Freeman’s study on neurodiverse individuals seeking entrepreneurship and being a force for generating creative capital, driven to innovate and improvise.
  • Len Adler, M.D., one of the leading researchers in adult ADD/ADHD and a Professor of psychiatry at New York University, believes that at least 75% of adults who have ADD/ADHD do not know that they have it. Individuals with ADD/ADHD may show a diminished capacity for self-awareness relative to neurotypical individuals; resulting in difficulty fulfilling one’s potential in the workplace, establishing and maintaining interpersonal relationships, and maintaining a generally positive sense of self.

The primary goal of this research is to explore if ADD/ADHD can be predicted in the workplace. If ADD/ADHD at work can be predicted, this research will form the basis for global changes in the workplace and the development of personalized human and AI interventions that help individuals with ADD/ADHD, as well as workplace leaders uncover untapped potential and overcome perceived challenges in the workplace.
