These are our North Star ethical commitments, and as we are still a start-up in the early stages, we are not yet fully at this ideal state. We are, however, moving rapidly towards it, and earnestly aim to get there as soon as possible. Along the way, we acknowledge that we will stumble, but we remain firmly and sincerely committed to constantly improving, moving in the right direction and to being transparent about our journey.
We are firmly committed to being a force for good in the social and professional world and in the world of AI. We will always use our power and influence responsibly by putting your interests first, and ensuring our products and services have a positive impact on society. We commit to ensuring that our products promote inclusivity, minimise unfairly discriminatory practices, and enable people to live more authentically connected lives, helping everybody to realise their full potential. We are committed to building and championing AI products that are designed to help scale the value and impact of humans, not replace them completely. We commit to working towards a fairer and more inclusive, more authentic, AI-augmented world that empowers everyone to thrive.
We are deeply committed to creating and fostering safe and reliable products. We never knowingly do harm. We place a high value on ensuring that our AI systems pose no risks to humans, their privacy, or their personal data. The trust and safety of our users are paramount, and to ensure this, we diligently ensure our products are rigorously tested and highly secure. We think carefully about the future risks and possibilities, always considering optimistic and pessimistic scenarios, and we plan and build accordingly. We believe in putting people first and commit to using technology for the betterment, and not to the detriment, of people and communities.
We are committed to respecting your autonomy and privacy, and enabling you to maintain maximal control of your data. We acknowledge and respect your autonomy to make decisions about your information. It includes your autonomy to decide what information you want to share, who you want to share it with, and when you want to stop sharing it. We promise to ensure your data remains private and protected, not accessed or shared without your explicit consent. We also recognize your right to control your data, which means you can access, edit, view, or delete your personal data at any time. We commit to assuming guardianship, not ownership, of your data, and to enabling your easy control over what we do with it.
We believe fairness, accessibility and collaboration are fundamental to the world and all of our lives. We actively work to identify and eliminate bias in all areas of our product: from the words we write and publish to the AI we train and use. Similarly, accessibility isn’t an afterthought, it’s fundamentally part of the design right from the beginning and throughout everything. We consult with accessibility experts, and we welcome open feedback where we are falling short or could do better. We build our AI to work alongside humans for the good of humans. We commit to building technology that empowers everyone to minimise the effects of their unconscious bias, to create workplace cultures that are accessible to all, and to build teams that are collaborative, understanding, and inclusive of everybody.
We believe that transparency is vital for our users and the wider community to be fully informed, and for the tech that they use to be comprehensible by them. For us, transparency means that we never hide anything from you. We fully and openly share, in plain language, information about our AI systems including how they work, the data they use, their reliability, and our considered expectations about their potential impact: how they may affect the world. We commit to building explainable systems and models, understandable by our users and the wider community. It's crucial for us to ensure that our users and stakeholders understand our AI technology, its capabilities, and its limitations. We commit to sharing, in plain language, what we stand for, what we learn, and what we know that we don’t know about our systems.
We commit to integrating our commitments into our entire team and practices. We involve our whole team in these commitments, with everyone from the developers to the executive and board levels embodying their importance and their role in upholding them as guardians of your data and your wellbeing. This is true from onboarding, to the code review and release process, to all guidelines and training. We enable ongoing upskilling in ethics literacy, which covers how to think and productively talk about ethics and infuses a practice of ethical thinking into everything our team does. We commit to upskilling, encouraging and making space for critical thinking and open dialogue about the possible effects of the decisions we make in our teams and as a company.
We invite you to hold us accountable to our commitments. We hold ourselves accountable, with both an internal Ethics committee that is tasked with continually auditing us internally and is embedded in every team, and an external team of Ethics Advisors who we invite to conduct audits. We commit to considering all internal and external feedback, to admitting when we can do better, and to continually doing better. We commit to holding ourselves accountable and to graciously being held accountable by you.
