What does wellbeing mean?

Wellbeing means experiencing vitality and feeling good about yourself. It encompasses both mental health and physical health, and improving your emotional resilience can help boost your wellbeing in all areas of life—work, personal relationships, spirituality, purpose, health and more.

What are the 5 ways to wellbeing?

The New Economics Foundation developed its set of “5 Ways to Wellbeing” in 2008 by examining the latest research.

The 5 ways to wellbeing are:

  • Connect with others. Having strong, healthy relationships have been proven to have a drastic impact on your mental health and physical wellbeing. They can even increase longevity!
  • Be active. This may seem like a no-brainer, but research shows that physical activity can improve your mood, ward off (or decrease symptoms of) mental illness such as depression, prevent disease and boost your confidence.
  • Learn new skills. By doing so, you can connect with others who are also learning or already have the skill, find your sense of purpose and increase your self-esteem.
  • Be generous. Even small acts of kindness and generosity can give your brain a dopamine boost, making you feel better. It will also help you to feel a sense of purpose and build relationships.
  • Be present. Practicing gratitude and mindfulness exercises can help you manage stress, relieve anxiety, improve your focus and increase your enjoyment of life.

How can I improve my wellbeing?

The 5 steps to wellbeing above is a great place to start in your journey to wellbeing, but most people need some additional motivation and accountability to start implementing these changes.

We like to think of wellbeing as a three-legged stool; the stool cannot remain strong and sturdy for long if one of the legs is weak and neglected!

What is digital wellbeing?

Digital wellbeing is the consideration of how technology and digital services impact a person’s mental health, physical health, or emotional health.

The concept of digital wellbeing has been around for a while but has only recently gone mainstream. With the rise of digital and remote jobs, countries around the world are starting to consider legislation to protect worker’s rights to disconnect after 5 or 6pm, due to the detrimental effects on health of working in an ‘always on’ culture.
